  • For the Brownie Base:
    • ¾ cup cocoa powder
    • 1½ cups granulated sugar
    • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • Optional: 1 teaspoon brewed coffee, ½ cup bittersweet chocolate disks
  • For the Salted Caramel Sauce:
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
    • ½ cup heavy cream, room temperature
    • 1 teaspoon Maldon Sea Salt Flakes (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brownie Base:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
    • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt butter. Stir in sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and optional brewed coffee until smooth.
    • Gradually fold in cocoa powder, flour, and salt until combined.
    • Spread half the brownie batter evenly in the prepared dish and set aside.
  2. Make the Salted Caramel Sauce:
    • Heat sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring until it melts into a golden amber color (about 5–8 minutes).
    • Remove from heat and carefully stir in butter until fully incorporated.
    • Slowly add heavy cream, stirring continuously. Mix in sea salt and let cool slightly.
  3. Assemble the Brownies:
    • Pour a layer of salted caramel sauce over the brownie batter. Top with the remaining brownie batter, spreading it carefully.
  4. Bake and Cool:
    • Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
    • Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan for about 1 hour before slicing.
